Leave the stems and leaves of Hippeastrum (Amarylis) to die back naturally but remove spent flowers.

Pot up dahlia tubers in peat free multipurpose compost with the buds facing upwards. Keep just moist and place in a bright frost free location until they are ready to plant out at the end of May.

Remove faded flowerheads and seedpods of early flowering daffodils. Let the leaves die back naturally to return energy to the bulb.

Finish fruit tree and bushes pruning before leaf or flower buds burst open.

Sow sweet peas for flowering in summer4. Place them in small pots in a propagator on a sunny window sill.

Tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines and sweet peppers can all be sown indoors using a plant propagator.

Prune  blueberries. Remove up to a quarter of the oldest and thickest stems at the base of a mature blueberry plant or prune to a younger strong shoot lower down on the branch.

Trim Jasmininum Nudiflorum once the flowers start to fade. Remove weak, dead and damaged stems. Tie in new growth and shorten all other flowered shoots to within two or three buds of the main branches.

Once weeds begin to grow, the soil is warm enough for seed sowing to begin outdoors. Broad beans, carrots, parsnips can all be sown early.

Cutdown green manures and allow the foliage to wilt before  digging in then wait at least two weeks to let it decay prior to planting.
