Prune apple and pear trees once the leaves have fallen between now and early March. Aim to maintain an open goblet shaped crown. Wait until next summer to prune stone fruits, such as cherries and plums to avoid silver leaf disease.

Leave ivy untrimmed. This means it will produce berries which are valuable food for birds next spring.

In mild weather, grass will continue to grow, set mower blades on a high setting of about 4cm.

Avoid over water house plants because they start needing less water this month. If you are unsure, allow the surface of the compost to dry a little before watering again.

Grape vines should be pruned towards the end of this month or in December, removing the side branches back to two buds.

You can plant tulip bulbs this month. Plant to two or three times the bulbs depth.

Japanese maples (Acers) require little pruning but if it is needed it should be done now after the leaves drop. Prune to a well placed side branch without leaving a stub, as it can result in die-back.

Barley-straw bales placed in ponds to reduce algae growth during summer can be removed. Leave them by the pond for a day or two to allow invertebrates to escape.

Plant bare rooted raspberry canes in well manure soil 45-60 cm apart. Add slow release fertiliser (Osmocote). After planting apply a 3″ mulch around the canes.

Regularly clean bird feeders and bird baths, to prevent the spread of avian pox.
