Remove spent flowers from camellias and rhododendrons. Avoid damage to brittle leaf buds. They appear just behind the blooms.

Start summer pruning of gooseberries, shorten current seasons growth back to 5 leaves. Prune out shoots affected by gooseberry mildew.

Clean and refresh water in birdbaths regularly to prevent disease.

Hang pheromone traps in apple trees to monitor codling moth.

Spray trunks and crowns of tree ferns regularly to stop drying out in warm weather.

Divide bearded irises after flowering, replanting sections with at least two fans of leaves attached. Do not plant deep.

Plant pencil thick leeks transplants into 6″ deep holes and water well.

Continue planting out or direct sowing runner and french beans.

Cut oriental poppies back to ground level after flowering. New foliage will follow.

Continue to earth up potatoes.
