Summer prune wisteria this month or next, cutting back long, whippy shoots to five or six buds from a main stem.

Lift first early potatoes by the end of the month. Potatoes are ready to lift when they flower.

For late season colour, plant autumn flowering bulbs, such as Colchicum and Nerines.

Harvest summer fruiting raspberries and as they finish, cut out fruited canes. Thin and tie in new ones to support wires, spacing the stems about 4in apart.

Continue to feed tomatoes, peppers, chillies and melons with a high potassium liquid feed.

Lift and divide bearded iris. Retain young pieces bearing leaves. Trim foliage to 6″ replant in a sunny position do not cover rhizomes.

Take semi-ripe cuttings of Lavender, Thyme, Rosemary and Sage.

Lift spring planted garlic bulbs promptly once foliage yellows in a single layer either out in the sunshine, under glass or in a dry well ventilated shed.

Sow turnips, spring cabbage, fennel and autumn/winter salad crops.

Fruit trees such as apples, pears and plums may set more fruit than is ideal. Trees will natuarally discard fruit during the “June Drop”. It may still be necessary to thin fruitlets further to improve the size and the quality of remaining fruit.
